Network Inventory Advisor 3.5 is here!

June 1st, 2009

After more than 2-month delay, we are changing everything. PC Inventory Advisor is now Network Inventory Advisor (thanks amb). Yesterday we uploaded the totally new version of our network inventory toolkit, which has a new name now. We added long-awaited features and fixed more than 200 bugs both reported by our users and found by our test lab. We will be sending a newsletter to all registered clients shortly, and automatic updates notification will be fired. Please, download Network Inventory Advisor 3.5 now, install it and let us know what you think of the new release. This update is totally free for all users of version 3.x.

Among the top features we added you will find:

SNMP devices inventory support

You can now inventory your IP-powered network devices

Since now on Network Inventory Advisor will automatically discover all your network devices having IP assigned. You will be able to easily scan and obtain technical data from WiFi access points, modems, multifunctionals, printers, IP phones, etc. SNMP v1 and v2c are supported, so you can easily customize ‘community’ setting as well. Moreover, with version 3.5 you can add your own information to any node on your inventory list… check this:

User-defined fields (screenshot)

Now you can add any searchable and sortable data to your nodes, and later on use these data fields in your reports. It’s quite a useful feature, which we received a very positive feedback on from all of you who tried the beta version before the release. You can use custom fields to denote whether a node has a UPS or scanner attached (or needs one), asset acquiring date, service tags and much more! Custom fields can be managed on a higher level in Settings, and used in Tabular or Detailed reports, so it’s really simple to build analytics and inventory reports with your own data accompanying technical information collected from your IT assets.

Command-line interface

Command-line interface is another new feature of Network Inventory Advisor

Network Inventory Advisor can be easily manipulated using command-line instructions and calls. It’s another great way to integrate Network Inventory Advisor into your current auditing solution, accounting system or CMDB.

Among the rest of new features, I’d highlight the following ones:

  • ENHANCED: now Network Inventory Advisor lets you specify more than 30 various device types identified by individual icons
  • ENHANCED: data collection on processors when scanned with the agent utility
  • ENHANCED: device type is detected automatically (when possible)
  • ENHANCED: more detailed status messages in the scanning dialog
  • ENHANCED: “Owner” field is no longer custom, it is automatically collected when scanning remote nodes
  • ENHANCED: user interface localizations (Spanish localization added)
  • ENHANCED: device factsheet has been re-designed in all nodes’ reports
  • ENHANCED: export to MS Access SQL is now available as a separate option
  • ENHANCED: scheduler was slightly enhanced and now provides more details on the actual status of its actions
  • ENHANCED: network tree state is now saved when moving and re-grouping nodes
  • ENHANCED: pre-configuration wizard now lets you include network device into scan right away
  • ENHANCED: nodes’ prices can be specified with currency now
  • ENHANCED: new pre-defined “Users” report, it now reflects the list of users logged on in the network
  • ENHANCED: demo limitations are less severe now, you can export and print all the data on your localhost while you are within a free trial period
  • ENHANCED: better support of all versions of MS Office when collecting their product keys and serial #’s
  • ENHANCED: grace scan cancelling
  • ENHANCED: Windows 7 RC was added to the list of supported OS and to the network summary report
  • and some fixes:
  • FIXED: domain nodes scanning via WMI
  • FIXED: some export issues for SQL format
  • FIXED: some issues in Settings
  • FIXED: several crashes within Chinese and Japanese localizations
  • FIXED: data export for Macs
  • FIXED: some critical fixes when running Network Inventory Advisor in Windows 2000
  • FIXED: other bugs
  • We are sure you’ll like the new release. Still as it is a major upgrade, please, backup your current installation folder of PC Inventory Advisor (just in case). Other than that it’s absolutely safe to install Network Inventory Advisor replacing your current copy of PC Inventory Advisor, your current data is secure and will not be removed.
    Thank you

Build 3.2.791: better scanning process, multiple logins, Windows Updates, localized user interface and 50+ other enhancements

    March 13th, 2009

PC Inventory Advisor 3.2.791 is available now. As some of you may have noticed, we are putting a lot of effort into scanning quality now, so your network inventory experience is the smoothest and most reliable ever. With this new update, actually there was an intermediary one (build 3.2.743), we introduced several “big” features and a long list of minor improvements which polish the scanning process and guarantee much better experience collecting your network details.

    New in 3.2.791:

    Multiple Network Logins

PC Inventory Advisor - Multiple logins configuration

PC Inventory Advisor - Multiple logins configuration

We got so many requests for this feature, that we couldn’t miss it. Now you can easily specify specific logins for groups and individual nodes, so there’s no need to split scanning process into several stages to get all your network assets inventoried.

    Customizable alerts

Now you can tune several parameters in network alerts collected by PC Inventory Advisor.

    Windows Automatic Updates status

Windows Automatic Updates in the reports

Windows Automatic Updates in the reports

Whenever you scan a Windows node now, you will get all the details on Windows Updates status, detection, download and installation date and time, as well as corresponding alerts in your network or node summary.

    Remote desktop connection

Remote Desktop Connection in PC Inventory Advisor

Remote Desktop Connection in PC Inventory Advisor

Now you can easily connect to any node remotely via RDP, simply right-click the node in the tree, and select the corresponding option. Windows Remote Desktop will be launched and connection will be established, wait for more RDP software solutions to be supported in the nearest future.

Better detection of logged on users

Currently active user in a nodes report

Currently active user in a node's report

We also spent quite some time on polishing the detection mechanisms of currently logged on users on workgroup and domain nodes. You will now find the new User Account field in every node’s factsheet, as well as correctly listed logged on user in tabular reports. Direct domain nodes scanning via WMI is also improved.

    Fast & Stable Scanning

Now you can achieve much better scanning results by configuring connection and scanning methods utilized by PC Inventory Advisor with the help of new options in Settings: Connection and Performance.

    First GUI localizations

We now speak your language! Among the first localizations which we added into build 3.2.791 you will find German, French, Chinese, Japanese & Russian. More languages are coming soon.

    Also:

    • Nodes that were not scanned for some reason (access denied, etc) may not be added to the network tree, optionally
    • The option to show only logged on domain user accounts
    • Network summary compilation is 20 times faster now
    • Much better support for 2000+ nodes networks
    • Custom and pre-defined reports generation on Macs
    • Export into different databases is completely separated now
    • Nodes counters for groups
    • …and more than 50 other enhancements and improvements in total

Download PC Inventory Advisor 3.2.791 now and let us know if you like it, and what else you suppose should be added! Thanks

    PC Inventory Advisor 3.2.708

    January 18th, 2009

This minor update was uploaded yesterday. It fixes several critical issues, which were found in builds 628 and 704 uploaded in November and December (one of them reported at our forum, by fgriffith). These were fixed now.

We also updated tabular reports with a new available field (# of local printers) which can be added to your reports now, as well as Macs support, so they are also included in your reports.

Please, download PC Inventory Advisor 3.2.708 manually, as automatic update will not fetch it. Thank you

    minor update - Major Improvements

    January 12th, 2009

Jeff is here to let everyone know about the availability of the new version of PC Inventory Advisor. Today, it’s version 3.2.704. We did our best to analyze and take into consideration and further implementation all your feature requests and ideas. And we are here with this minor update with major new features. Yes, even though the version number is still 3.2, the features we added are really wanted and standing out.

Here’s the “what’s new list” for version 3.2.704, top new features in the beginning:

#1 Scanning scheduler with options to e-mail, upload and export multiple network reports

PC Inventoy Advisor - Scanning scheduler

With PC Inventory Advisor you don’t need to go and manually scan remote assets of yours, you don’t need to install anything on remote nodes to get them inventoried, and now you don’t even have to run PC Inventory Advisor! Automate all your inventory tasks once and forever with our hot “Scanning scheduler”. It lets you automate network scanning, reports building, alerts e-mailing, inventory data management and more. See the latest updated release for details.

#2 Custom security software detection mechanism for antiviruses, firewalls and antispyware

PC Inventory Advisor - Custom detection of scurity software

Many of you told us that PC Inventory Advisor does not detect your antivirus, especially antiviruses for servers (Windows 2003 and 2008), where MS Security Center does not exist. We heard you. We are introducing this custom detection mechanism so you no longer receive false alerts on unprotected systems. Our database that detects antiviruses, firewalls and antispyware software titles which do not (or cannot) report to Security Center will be automatically updated from our website, so even the newest editions of your network security software are listed!

#3 SQL & XML export, you can now export SQL scripts for MS SQL / MySQL and MS Access separately

PC Inventory Advisor - export options

Data consistency and exchange within PC Inventory Advisor and your in-house inventory systems are very important to us. And therefore we do our best to offer most requested export options to our clients. Within this release we concentrated on database export. And also enhanced XML and other export formats with snapshots timestamps and additional verifications for database tables existence.

…among the other minor tweaks we implemented, I’d like to highlight the following ones:

    • scanning log is now global and is represented in the bottom panel of the user interface
    • agent utility export is now more transparent and explained
    • tabular reports are now enhanced with “Currently logged on user” field
    • Security & Protection data category in software listing for each asset
    • scanning by IP and PC name internal algorithms
    • export to TSV format
    • complete User Guide (in English)
    • inventory data import status dialog

Thank you for selecting ClearApps as your trusted supplier of network inventory software solution! We’d be glad to hear what you think about our new release. If you have any ideas for new features feel free to request them any time.

PC Inventory Advisor 3.2 - more than expected

    November 23rd, 2008

After almost half a year without major upgrades, the whole ClearApps team welcome our valued clients and visitors with a new version of PC Inventory Advisor, our premium network inventory solution for small, medium and large networks. One of the key features that we invested most of our time in when preparing this release was _stability_ and …control.

Most of the features which we added were requested directly or inspired by you. And we truly hope you’ll love the new update, and send in even more usage scenarios so we can adapt PC Inventory Advisor to your IT environments and client networks. If you are interested in our future roadmap or have other questions, please, feel free to contact us any time.

What’s hot in PC Inventory Advisor 3.2?

First of all we concentrated on the following top new features:

    #1  Tabular reports

Flexible Network Inventory: Custom Tabular Reports

Now you can easily select which data fields you are interested in, and compile your own network inventory reports adding target nodes dynamically. So, with tabular reporting, you will get a flexible dataset collected from the nodes of your interest. It works like the following: first, you select the nodes you would like to see on the list; secondly, you build a list of parameters you are interested in, you can choose among more than 40 software, hardware and other inventory data fields; sort the list; and go!

Pre-defined reports are still in place for fast 1-click inventory reporting. Probably, one of the next updates will feature creating your own pre-defined reports for future references and automation needs.

You probably noticed the new office address, and phone number, please, update your records accordingly, so we still stay in touch and provide only the highest level of services.

    #2  Licenses compliance audit

Since version 3.2 “All software” tab in your network summary is also your single place to keep tabs on all the software installed in your network and also monitor the number of licenses you have for each title.

PC Inventory: Software Licenses Compliance Audit

PC Inventory Advisor will automatically calculate licenses shortage or notify you when if not all licenses are used. Additionally we added sorting to this list, so whenever you get the new network summary with PC Inventory Advisor, it’s more convenient and much easier to analyze software usage in your network.

    #3 …

Among the rest of new features, I would like to highlight the fact that we fixed more than 100 glitches in reporting and inventory modules, invested hundreds of hours in core stability and also concentrated on the following:

    • sorting of reports on network software and tabular reports
    • improved CSV export
    • resizable scanning dialog
    • new pre-defined report “Inventory by brand”
    • highlighting the nodes with new reports available
    • new export format selection
    • better detection of currently logged on users
    • separated scanning for domain users, so you no longer see hundreds of users in your asset report
    • enhanced troubleshooting
    • RMB-menu in reports
    • enhanced pre-configuration window
    • support of Macs in custom and pre-defined reports
    • categorization of reports on Windows assets, so you can select which data should be collected, and which can be omitted
    • refreshed Reports tab and intro
    • your top feature requests

You can download the latest PC Inventory Advisor right away! …if your automatic update notification hasn’t arrived for any reason.

Plus… we refreshed our website. Talk to you soon. And thanks for staying with ClearApps!

    Post-release bug-fix upgrade

    July 4th, 2008

We uploaded PC Inventory Advisor 3.1.518 yesterday. It is mostly a bug-fix recommended update. Here’s what we enhanced:

    •  Several random crashes fixed
    • Comma-delimited and semicolon-delimited CSV export improved and is correctly processed now
    • Automatic updater was refreshed a little bit
    • Export into SQL no longer produces empty files (if it still does in your system, please, report this urgently)
    • PC Inventory Advisor now supports working with Central Repository located elsewhere from the admin PC
    • several other enhancements

Thank you for downloading the update ;)

It’s here! Version 3.1 is available: Macs inventory, Export into SQL and more

    June 25th, 2008

Yes, PC Inventory Advisor 3.1 hits the stores now. It is the first major upgrade since the release of the 3rd edition of our network inventory solution back in March. Since that time we were attentively listening to our clients’ feedback and were doing our best to implement only the top requested features, still keeping to the main project roadmap which we have in mind. Now, after several closed betas, we are ready to present PC Inventory Advisor 3.1 to the public.

    Download the new version now

The major new features which we introduced are:PC Inventory Advisor to scan Macs!

    • Macs inventory: now you can easily inventory Mac OS X computers which are on your network, get all their details on applications and hardware, as well as  preferences, network configuration, video and audio settings and even system logs
    • New export format: now you can export your inventory and assets reports directly into SQL, so you can sync your inventory data easily with your database. Additionally, CSV and XML export options are completely re-designed now
    • Logon script scanning: add a special agent call to your Domain Logon Script and inventory all your network assets automatically whenever users logon to the domain, PC Inventory Advisor will automatically notify you when there’s a new asset available for reviewing

    More flexibility in scanning options

    • Standalone audit agent export: do you want to track any assets which are not on your network but still in your area of responsibility? And you still want to keep all of them in one convenient place for centralized inventory and reports? Wait no more! Simply export an agent utility directly from your admin PC where PC Inventory Advisor is installed, copy it to your Flash drive or whatever, and run this inventory agent at the target system. That’s it, now you have a special inventory data file which you can easily import into your Assets tree, and have all your assets in one place
    • Central Repository: with the new options for logon or e-mail scanning (or by simply asking all your users to run the inventory agent when they have time), you can collect all the inventory data and import it into your admin copy of PC Inventory Advisor automatically with the help of publicly accessible Central Repository, which can be easily configured in program’s settings
    • Pre-configuration wizard: if you are not familiar with PC Inventory Advisor settings being a first-time user, you will be presented with a very simple pre-config wizard; answering just 3 simple questions, you will help pre-configure software settings to match your network configuration better
    • More data snapshots settings: we introduced 2 new settings to make your experience with going back into your inventory history much more fluent. One is snapshot age, and the other one is snapshots pruning. They will help you prevent constant re-scanning of the assets when you build a report, and will also make sure you are not overwhelmed by the number of data snapshots which you have in your repository for numerous assets which you handle
    • Updated ‘All software’ report: network summaries show you the list of computers you manage, all software installed in your net as well as hardware and more. Now you can easily compare the version and installation date of software titles present in your network to make sure you have theall critical updates on every asset of yours

New report on users on your net

    • New repors on users logged on: now PC Inventory Advisor will show you who is logged on where, and provide you with up to 20 parameters on every user on every PC you manage
    • New Icons: now you can easily visually distinguish your assets,  as the icons in the Assets tree now reflect the type of the device (laptop, desktop PC, server, Mac) and notify you when there’s a new inventory snapshot which you haven’t reviewed yet

Is this all? No, of course not. Add several hundres minor glitches and bugs fixed, new ribbon look, extended options in inventory wizard, enriched Settings dialog, new network factsheet, etc, etc, etc… and you will get all new greatly enhanced PC Inventory Advisor 3.1, which is by the way a free upgrade to all current users of version 3.x.

    Happy network inventorying and downloading!

    a little recommended update

    May 7th, 2008

Today we uploaded a minor “polishing” update of PC Inventory Advisor 3.0.415. It mostly includes fixes and stabilizations, like the following ones:

    • Several fixes in network summary display
    • Corrections in software accounting reports
    • Fixed issue with doubling hardware on some Windows XP machines due to WMI listing duplicate entries one of which is always offline
    • Assets by locations are enumerated more accurately

Better grouping in network inventory summary

    • Assets marked as new are now correctly sorted
    • Several crashes were also fixed (if PC Inventory Advisor ever crashed in your case, you should definitely upgrade to the latest release)
    • …other tiny improvements

    Download PC Inventory Advisor now

Thanks for everyone keeping up with the up-to-date versions! We are planning to have version 3.1 online in 1-2 weeks with some new, really “juicy”, features.

    PC Inventory Advisor 3.0.406 released

    April 28th, 2008

Yes, this is another minor enhancements build. The new features include software accounting, reports improvements, better support of Windows 64-bit editions and much more! This upgrade is free for all registered users. Just download the newest demo and install it without removing the previous version you have, in this way you will easily save all the previous network inventory reports that you had.

    Software and hardware accounting

Network Inventory Reporting - Software AccountingNow you can easily build reports on your whole network to find out where certain software or hardware is installed. It’s really simple to do, just go to Network Summary (used to be ‘My Network’ in previous builds), then navigate to ‘All software’ or ‘All hardware’ tab, find the title of interest and click the ‘installed on…’ link. That’s it. You now have the list of assets which have this software or hardware installed. Additionally you can see the list of assets where it is missing, and the number of offline assets for the time of scanning. Export or print the report now or just leave it in PC Inventory Advisor, it is associated with the timestamped network inventory summary, and will always be here!

    Reporting improved

We’ve also added several enhancements in the reports:

    • Asset Serial Number is now correct, and equals the BIOS serial
    • More details on Microsoft Office version and installation are now aggregated
    • Every software title in the report now provides the details on Installation source, Uninstallation string and current Installation directory
    • Program Files folder is scanned along with Program Files (x86) folder, as well as both 32-bit and 64-bit software installed is handled correctly
    • Several enhancements in CSV exporting

We also worked on timing, and in some cases we managed to improve scanning speed almost 30%. So, happy downloading! As always, we are ready to hear your comments.

    Build 386… online

    April 16th, 2008

New version of PC Inventory Advisor releasedYesterday we uploaded the new version. It’s ready for download and we are waiting for your comments.

PC Inventory Advisor 3.0.386 re-introduces several core features of network inventory tasks within our solution. The new download is surely a free upgrade to all current users, auto-update is off for this build as well, but will most probably be enabled in the next upgrade that we’ll have. We tried to add most of the requests that we got since the major release into this new compilation, more to come in the nearest ones.

As for the details of the 3.0.386 version:

Record Windows product key1. Now you can easily track Windows OS product key in the asset reports. This feature was previously available as well, but was OS compilation-dependent, now it’s working with any Windows version. Just re-scan your network with the new PC Inventory Advisor, and all your OS product keys will be there.

    2. Network summary: All Software report is alphabetically sorted now, which makes searching for particular software much easier. BTW, did you know that you just need to press CTRL+F to start a search in any report in PC Inventory Advisor?

    3. Network price is calculated more accurately no matter which asset price is or is not specified.

    4. Scanning process can be cancelled any time, no matter what PC Inventory Advisor does at the moment: pinging, querying DNS, etc.

    5. While scanning you are presented with the asset network name and network group or domain.

    6. Navigation throughout the reports is greatly enhanced. Hyperlinks to other assets are now more responsive than before. You don’t have to get back to the assets tree all the time you want to go to a different asset report from a network summary any more, just go on and click the asset name wherever you find it underlined.

PC Inventory Advisor - rename your assets7. Assets can be renamed. No matter how your DNS server is configured now, you can easily rename any asset and it will use the new name in all reports and network summary as well. So you have total control over the assets tree in PC Inventory Advisor now: re-group, relocate, rename, reset grouping in just a single click!

    8. Easily distinguish real printers from the virtual ones by knowing which one is the default printer in the asset’s environment.

    9. We also improved the core of the reports: you will find the serial number of the hard drive, manufacturer and serial number of your assets’ motherboards and more…

    10. PC Inventory Advisor now handles WMI errors more accurately. Depending on the severity of the error (either caused by corrupted installation of WMI or by its limited version, say, in OEM operating system installations) , we will now either omit the error or correct it automatically to ensure smooth and effective scanning of your network without additional interruptions.

    11. Software installation date is also collected now. That’s the first step to a more global software inventory and internal user activities.

And among other fixes, I’d point out fixes in relation to time and date calculation on the snapshots bar, splitting of CIM_LogicalDevice into smaller categories, several usability enhancements for smoother scanning of the network with wizard, purging of XML and HTML reports internals, and some other minor improvements.

We’ll be back with an update and hopefully a new build sometime next week. Thanks for downloading and support!
